Agricultural Officer in the Department of Agriculture, Government of Kerala, is involved in agricultural extension activities and in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of all the Agricultural/ horticultural activities including government sponsored schemes in a “panchayat”- a Local Self Government with a geographical area of more than 10 sq km. As an agricultural/ horticultural expert, extensionist and the head of office of “Krishibhavan” - the basic unit office which has jurisdiction over a panchayat, the efforts are focussed on enhancing area, production and productivity of various cropsand also the maintanance of hotrticultural plants. The duties/ expertise are as follows:
• Preparation, implementation and monitoring of location specific horticultural/ agricultural projects
• Nursery management and maintenance of indoor & outdoor crops/plants
• Providing consultancy services to farmers for establishing plantations of cash crops like cashew,pepper and other spices. Expert in cultivation of vegetables, ornamental plants, fruit plants, etc. incorporating various agronomic practices and preparation of Package of Practices for their scientific cultivation.
• Conducting trainings/ seminars for motivating farmers to adopt innovative and improved agricultural practices.
• Expertise in Precision-farming techniques like glasshouse and greenhouse management for horticultural plants/ crops including vegetables and fruit plants
• Good practical knowledge on designing and installation of small/ micro irrigation units like drip, mist and sprinkler irrigation
• Production of quality seeds/ seedlings and its certification
• Warehouse management of agricultural commodities and horticultural plants
• Maintenance of landscaping works including lawn, ornamental gardening,etc. as part of beautification of public places.
• Handling of agricultural produces including vegetable seeds / vegetables , paddy seeds and seedlings of various horticulture plants/crops and its sale
• Good practical knowledge of agricultural machinery including lawn movers and other agricultural implements
• As fertilizer/ pesticide Inspector to maintain the quality of inputs supplied by enforcing laws and random sampling methods and to ensure availability of pestcides/ fungicides/ fertilizers. Plant quarantine/Pest surveilance and irradication/control of pest/disease out-breaks by adopting Integrated pest/disease management (IPM)
• Advisory services on post-harvest technology and value addition of agricultural produce and project preparation for new agri-business ventures.
• Expert in organic/inorganic pesticides, weedicides, fertilizers and its application including fertigation.
• Preparation of soil health plan including requirement of fertilizers for each area/plot based on soil test data
• Conducting adaptive trials and demonstrations of improved technology.
• Office administration & mangement of staff under control effectively to cover the entire area
• As claim settlement Officer, to ensure the speedy settlement of claims of farmers for their crop loss due to natural calamity
• Maintenance of the stock and stores and fund utilization with the help of computer software.
