The Department of Transport is currently planning the transportation masterplan including light rail, metro and high speed links. However it is also in talks to connect the two major cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai only a short distance of 120km which takes 1 1/2 hours by car.

A high speed link gives the governments a key opportunity to link two thriving UAE cities with a important link which is environmentally friendly and will enable workers, business people and most importantly tourists to travel between the two major destinations in the UAE.

Using a high speed train(250–300 km/h), the journey could be undertaken in a 30 mins. What will make or break this project will be the links to other forms of transport (metro, bus and taxi). A transport hub would have to be created at either end to ensure that it is used by more than just tourists.
